BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The United States Coast Guard has completed acquisition of the former Birmingham-Southern College campus, formally assuming control of the 192-acre Glenwood neighborhood property following the college's closure in May 2024. A Coast Guard spokesperson confirmed the transfer.
The campus includes 49 buildings: academic facilities, residence halls, a library, a chapel, a gymnasium, and athletic fields. The Coast Guard intends to use them. Specific plans for the property have not been announced.
"We're excited about the opportunities this facility presents," said the spokesperson, who did not specify what the opportunities were.
Birmingham-Southern College was founded in 1856 and operated continuously for 168 years before closing following a period of financial difficulty. Its enrollment at the time of closure was approximately 1,200 students. The college was known for its arts program and its sailing team. The sailing team's equipment has been removed.
The United States Coast Guard is a branch of the armed forces responsible for maritime law enforcement, search and rescue, and navigation safety along American waterways. Its primary operational areas include the coasts of the United States and its navigable inland waterways. Birmingham is located in Jefferson County, Alabama. The nearest body of water the Coast Guard patrols is approximately 350 miles to the south.
The agency noted in its statement that its operations extend to inland waterways. The Black Warrior River passes through Birmingham. It is navigable.
A formal activation ceremony for the new facility has not been scheduled. The chapel is still standing.
