Alabama Head Coach Kalen DeBoer Described as 'Committed to Alabama' Following $2 Million Raise; Was Also Committed Before Raise

TUSCALOOSA — The University of Alabama announced this week that head football coach Kalen DeBoer has received a $2 million salary adjustment and a contract extension following the program's appearance in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals. DeBoer described himself as committed to Alabama. The university described him the same way.

DeBoer is in his second season at Alabama. He succeeded Nick Saban, who coached the program for 17 years and won six national championships. DeBoer's first season resulted in a playoff quarterfinal appearance. DeBoer was committed during that season. He remains committed now that the season has concluded and the raise has been issued.

Athletic Director Greg Byrne noted the raise reflected the program's trajectory.

"Coach DeBoer is fully committed to this program and this university," Byrne said.

This reporter asked whether that commitment predated the raise.

"It did," Byrne said.

Byrne was asked whether the commitment had changed in character following the raise.

He said it had not changed in character. It was the same commitment, he said, now paired with an adjusted compensation structure.

DeBoer did not specify what being committed to Alabama consists of day to day, though it is presumed to involve coaching football. He coached football last season. He is expected to coach football next season. His commitment and the football season are therefore expected to overlap.

The contract extension runs through 2031. DeBoer's commitment status beyond 2031 has not been specified.

This reporter has covered three consecutive Alabama head coaching announcements. This reporter remains committed to Alabama coverage.
