Jack's Restaurant Jacksonville Reports 94% of Dining Room Currently Retired; Has Been the Case for Some Time

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. — The Jack's Restaurant on Pelham Road South in Jacksonville, Alabama does not advertise itself as a senior center. It has a drive-through, a standard menu, and a dining room that seats approximately forty. On a Tuesday morning at 9 a.m., roughly thirty-seven of those seats are occupied by retired adults who appear to have nowhere else they need to be.

This reporter counted twenty-two senior adults on a recent visit. They were seated at six tables. They were not eating.

"We come every morning," said one man, who did not give his name but gave the strong impression he had been at this specific table since well before this reporter arrived. "Been coming since it opened." He paused. "Before that, too. There was a different place."

Jack's Restaurant was founded in 1960 by Jack Caddell of Birmingham and now operates more than 300 locations across the Southeast. The Jacksonville location is at 1500 Pelham Road South. It opens at 6 a.m. By 6:15, according to one patron who declined to be identified as retired, the regulars are in.

The restaurant has not, to this reporter's knowledge, offered senior programming, a designated senior hour, group rate pricing, or a name for the arrangement. Asked whether Jack's considered itself a community gathering space for older adults, a manager on duty said she "hadn't really thought about it."

"They just come," she said.

She was asked whether they come every day.

"Pretty much," she said.

She was asked if she knew most of their names.

"Most of them," she said. "Some of them I just know the order."

A Black man in his eighties in the back corner was on his second coffee. He had been there when this reporter arrived. He was still there when this reporter left. He appeared entirely at peace. He did not look up.

Jack's has not responded to a request for comment regarding its role in the Jacksonville senior services infrastructure. This reporter notes the role appears to be well-established and requires no comment.
