Oxford Hardware Store Raises Prices Following Tariffs; Owner Notes He Voted for Candidate Who Proposed Tariffs; Would Vote for Him Again

OXFORD, Ala. — McCullough Hardware Supply on Oxford Exchange Boulevard raised prices on approximately 340 SKUs in March and April following the implementation of federal tariffs on imported steel, aluminum, and manufactured goods, owner Daryl McCullough confirmed this week.

The increases range from 8 to 31 percent across product categories that include fasteners, hand tools, electrical components, and plumbing supplies. McCullough said the adjustments reflect what his suppliers have passed on to him.

"I'm not absorbing what I can't absorb," he said.

McCullough, who confirmed he voted for Donald Trump in 2016, 2020, and 2024, said he was aware the tariffs were a stated policy position of the candidate he supported. He said this was not a secret.

"He ran on it," McCullough said. "I knew he was going to do it."

McCullough said he supports the policy. He noted that the prices in his store have gone up.

"There's a short-term cost and a long-term benefit," he said. "I believe in the long-term benefit."

He was asked what the long-term benefit was. He said it was bringing manufacturing back to the United States.

He was asked whether any manufacturing had returned to Oxford or the surrounding area. He said not to his knowledge. He said it was early.

McCullough said he would vote for Trump again in the next available election. He said the price increases and his vote were separate issues.

"They're not separate, but they're separate in the sense that one is a trade policy and one is my store," he said. "I can hold both things."

A customer in the plumbing aisle declined to comment.

The store is open Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
