JACKSONVILLE, Ala. — Randy Gifford, 44, of Jacksonville, updated the flag configuration on his 2019 Ford F-250 on Wednesday, the fourth time he has updated the configuration since January 1.
The current configuration consists of two flags mounted on the bed rail: a standard American flag on the passenger side and a Thin Blue Line flag on the driver side. The previous configuration, in use from April through last week, consisted of those two flags plus a Don't Tread on Me flag on a center mount.
Gifford said he removed the center flag because it was causing wind drag on the highway.
"At 70 miles per hour it was creating a real pull," he said. "I'm not going to compromise my fuel economy indefinitely for a flag."
Gifford's January configuration, which he called his "winter setup," consisted of a single large American flag and a Trump 2024 flag, which he said he retired following the inauguration. His February configuration added a Second Amendment flag, which he said he moved to his storage building in March after noticing the colors were fading.
He said all four 2026 configurations are documented in a photo album on his phone, which he offered to share.
Gifford said he does not plan further changes before July 4, at which point he will add an additional American flag for the holiday period. He said the holiday configuration is the most flags he runs at one time, which is four.
He acknowledged that four flags at highway speed creates a meaningful drag coefficient. He said July 4 is worth it.
The F-250 was purchased new in 2019. It has 87,400 miles. Gifford said it runs fine.
