WEAVER, Ala. — The City of Weaver, Alabama has completed its 81st year. The city was incorporated in 1945 following a vote of 60–4 among residents of the area, which at the time was an unincorporated community that had grown around a post office. The post office had been named for brothers who donated land for its construction. The brothers are not otherwise remembered.
Weaver is located on Alabama Highway 21, between Anniston to the south and Jacksonville to the north. Residents reached for comment confirmed this was accurate.
"That's where it is," said one Weaver resident, reached by phone. "Has been."
The city covers approximately 5.8 square miles and has a population of roughly 3,300. It has a mayor, a city council, police and fire departments, and a Dollar General that celebrated its two-year anniversary last month. It has had a city council since 1945 and considers this normal.
Weaver Mayor Tina Ballard said the city was "continuing to grow and serve its residents."
"Weaver is a great community," she said. "People choose to live here. That tells you something."
This reporter asked what it told you.
"It tells you they like it here," Ballard said.
The city has not issued a formal statement marking the 81st anniversary. Asked whether the city planned to observe the occasion in some way, the mayor's office said it had not discussed the matter.
"Eighty-one isn't a round number," a spokesperson said.
Weaver will mark its 85th anniversary in 2030 and its centennial in 2045. Whether it will issue formal statements on those occasions has not been determined. The city will continue, in the meantime, to be located between Anniston and Jacksonville.
