A man has been standing motionless on the corner of Greenbrier Road and Quintard Avenue since Tuesday morning. He has not moved, spoken, or otherwise indicated distress, causing concern among local shoppers and motorists.
The Anniston Police Department has performed two separate wellness checks on the individual, whose identity has not been released.
"We made contact with the gentleman on Tuesday afternoon and again on Wednesday evening," said Sgt. Marcus R. Williams of the Anniston Police Department. "He was lucid and aware of his surroundings. He stated that he was not in any trouble."
When asked for a reason for his prolonged stillness, the man reportedly told officers that he was "just thinking" and was in the process of "working something out." He politely declined any offers of assistance, water, or a chair.
Sgt. Williams confirmed that as the man is not breaking any laws, is not a danger to himself or others, and is on public property, the department has no grounds to remove him.
"He's just thinking," Sgt. Williams stated. "There's no ordinance against that."
In the interest of public safety, the police have placed four orange traffic cones around the man to create a small, protected area for him on the sidewalk. Motorists are advised to exercise caution in the area and to not disturb him.
